The Challenge
Every company has processes and functions to support its business. Business Process Management specifically focuses on these processes with a view to optimize and improve inefficiencies to ensure that only value adding activities are performed. With the introduction of mobile solutions in the late 1999 and early 2000s, companies leveraged technology to their benefit to improve its processes. Mobility however introduced a whole new range of management, control and governance challenges that dampened the potential of having a mobile workforce.

With the introduction of smarter and more powerful mobile devices, it is now feasible to completely integrate your existing applications (albeit for example Microsoft Office, workflow or traditional transactional systems) with your PDA whilst increasing control and governance. This is possible by using GPS (Global Positioning Tracking) capabilities and to link the exact location of each device when and where the transaction is concluded.
The maintenance technician can still complete his work ticket from the site, but the big advantage is that the mobile device and application can be configured to only allow the completion of the work ticket whilst within 5 meters of the exact location! Management suddenly has authority and supervisory control on all its field workers using technology. All transactions, photos, logins, etc. are automatically logged to a GPS coordinate showing the exact, absolute position of the device.
Integration with all other applications and ERP systems, including Geospatial information systems (GIS) is possible using wireless GPRS synchronization of data. If needed, and as can be seen, the data can be published on the internet with access for authorized personnel only. Daily routes and real-time tracking is possible.
Using the standard Office Mobile applications, access to all user and technical manuals are available on-site to ensure the correct and latest Standard Operating Procedures are used.
