The Challenge
When a company is contemplating process, facility or system change, they need to go through a decision and analysis phase. Simulation Modelling can be used as a tool to support capital expenditure decisions. Decisions like automation of existing processes; procurement of new equipment, revised facility lay-out and probable changes in the business processes can be simulated and analysed before any costs are incurred. Potential improvements to processes can be quantified and savings in terms of less paperwork and human handling of documents, as well as more qualitative measures such as greater accuracy and shorter process times (which leads to better customer service) is expected to flow from a simulation model.
The Solution
A Simulation model can also be used to identify future limitations, given an expected growth in demand. The risk of failure by going into design phase on a “gut feel” of what should work is eliminated. Hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of Rands can be saved doing a simulation to see which scenario is optimum. Further, once the model is completed, a run-time version of the model can be setup for the customer, and the customer can rerun this model when needed. For example if, in future, there is an increase in workload expected, the model can be used to see where probable problems and bottlenecks can occur.
